ARE NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS JUST A WASTE OF TIME?

-

Yes

I HAVE never understood why people wait until the coldest, darkest and most depressing month of the year to try and change their lives (“Diets will be scrapped in two weeks...”, January 1).

It’s no wonder people can’t keep to diets and health kicks when it is so dire outside and people need something to cheer them up.

Making a change to your life is about more than just feeling guilty because you’ve spent too much and over-indulged at Christmas.

So many New Year resolutions fail because people give up when the guilt wears off.

No

ANY vow to change your life will only work if you mean it.

New Year is as good a time as any to start, when we are skint and have drunk too much and put on a few pounds.

Two years ago I vowed to get my finances in order after splurging at Christmas and managed it through a mixture of common sense and determination. It worked that well that last year I vowed to lose a stone after getting on the scales on January 1 and topping 14 stone.

Now I am back to a size 10 and all through a bit of old-fashioned will power and a bit of exercise each week.
