Daily Express - - Front Page - (don’t expect next day delivery)

AMAZON billionaire Jeff Bezos, the world’s richest man, revealed yesterday he is to divorce his wife of 25 years in what could be the most expensive break-up in history.

The Amazon founder who is worth more than £110billion said in a tweet with his wife MacKenzie that they were to split following a period of “loving exploration and trial separation”.

He added that if they had known they would separate after 25 years together they would still do it again.

Mr and Mrs Bezos said they had decided to “continue our shared lives as friends”.

The statement did not address if the couple had signed a prenuptial agreement to share his wealth or how they would divide up Mr Bezos’s billions.

Much of that is his 16 per cent stake in Amazon but he also owns homes in Washington, New York, Texas and Beverly Hills.

Mr Bezos, 54, started Amazon in 1994, the year after he married his wife, 48, who is a novelist.

Amazon is based in Seattle where Mr and Mrs Bezos have their main home, a £54million estate in Medina.

Under the state’s divorce laws all assets accrued during the marriage are considered being equal property of both spouses, unless they signed an agreement.

The statement from Mr and Mrs Bezos said: “As our family and close friends know, after a long period of loving exploration and trial separation, we have decided to divorce and continue our shared lives as friends.

“We feel incredibly lucky to have found each other and deeply grateful for every one of the years we have been married to each other.

“If we had known we would separate after 25 years, we would do it all again.

“We’ve had such a great life together as a married couple, and we also see wonderful futures ahead, as parents, friends, partners in ventures and projects, and as individuals pursuing ventures and adventures.

“Though the labels might be different, we remain a family and we remain cherished friends.” Mr Bezos met his wife when they were both working at investment management firm DE Shaw where he was a vice-president and she was a research assistant.

The couple have three sons and adopted a daughter from China.

Together they own more land than any other private individuals in the United States, according to reports.

Their homes include £10million estate and an £18million mansion in Beverly Hills and a 400-acre estate in Texas.

They also have an £18million townhouse in Washington and a £6million apartment in Manhattan.

The most expensive divorce in history is said to have been billionaire Alec Wildenstein in 1998 from his wife Jocelyn, which was estimated at £2.9billion.

Rupert Murdoch is said to have paid out £1.3billion to his wife Anna after 31 years of marriage.
