Slothful Slough is least fit
FAMED as the setting for hit TV show The Office, the town of Slough now has a new claim – as the unfittest place in the country.
Only 43 per cent exercise for the recommended two-anda-half hours a week while around a third work out for less than 30 minutes.
The Berkshire town has been mocked for its dullness. Poet Sir John Betjeman wrote: “Come, friendly bombs and fall on Slough, it isn’t fit for humans now. There isn’t grass to graze a cow.”
Exeter topped the table as the fittest with 80.3 per cent achieving the NHS exercise guideline. Only 14.5 per cent report less than 30 minutes of exercise.
The NHS says that adults should get two-and-a-half hours of “moderate aerobic activity” like brisk walking or cycling or 75 minutes of “vigorous aerobic activity”.
Builders Barratt London, which commissioned the survey, said: “Unfortunately, Slough takes the honours for being the least fit, finding itself in last place of 352 local authorities.”
