Blair blasts snub to PM by Jeremy

-

TONY Blair joined the chorus of condemnation after Jeremy Corbyn refused to meet Theresa May for “national crisis” talks.

The ex-Prime Minister said Brexit negotiations were in a “mess” and hit out at the Labour leader for snubbing Mrs May.

And he was lost for words in a radio interview over what the party wants to happen next.

Mr Corbyn has faced intense criticism for shirking his duty to the country by ruling out meeting the Prime Minister unless she agrees to certain conditions.

“If, in a national crisis, the Prime Minister asks the Leader of the Opposition to talk, of course he should,” Mr Blair said.

Labour has been criticised for failing to spell out its Brexit policy and Mr Corbyn has refused to say if the party would even commit to implementing the referendum result if a general election was called. Mr Blair said he should make his position clear.

His despair over Labour’s Brexit policy was clear when presenter John Humphrys suggested on the BBC’s Today programme that voters did not know what the party wanted, other than another election.

“I don’t know what to say,” Mr Blair said.

Humphrys replied: “I’ve never heard Tony Blair say that before.”

The ex-Labour leader said MPs were right to reject Mrs May’s deal on Tuesday and that a second referendum offered the best way forward for the country.

“This is a complete mess now. It is not unreasonable to ask people if they want to think again,” he said.
