You plonkers! Del Boy joins fight to save Mandela House

- By Mark Jefferies

SIR David Jason has called for “Mandela House”, the block of flats made famous in Only Fools And Horses, a listed building to stop it being demolished for “posh” homes.

Harlech Tower was used to portray the outside of the fictional home of the Trotters in the BBC sitcom.

The building is in Acton, west London, although the show was set in Peckham, south-east London.

The high rise is to be demolished to make way for 5,000 apartments.

Asked about the destruction, Sir David, 78, who played Del Boy, said: “I think it should be a listed building but they are not going to listen, are they? What a shame but there you are. We’ve got to move on and it was a block of flats and it was of its time which was fine which is probably why we used it. It was great.”

Harlech was used for exterior scenes in the show’s opening titles, as well as being used in the show from 1981-’85.

Fans of Only Fools And Horses have launched a petition to save the building with some also arguing it should be awarded listed status.

Sir David also gave his backing to the new Only Fools Musical launching in London’s West End next month, which will see Del Boy played by Tom Bennett. Del Boy and Rodney Trotter outside the tower block, far left. It is now set to be pulled down for 2,500 plush new homes, right
