Cock-a-doodle-don’t! Bird’s kept me awake for 6 months

- By Olive Loveridge-Green

A JOBLESS man claims he only gets four hours uninterrupted sleep every night because he has a noisy cockerel for a neighbour.

Paul Curtis, 48, lives next to a care home where the bird is kept. He claims it is “destroying him” because it crows at night.

He says he has not slept properly for six months and is often kept up for days on end.

Cedarwood House care home introduced hens and cockerels in August to encourage its elderly residents with Alzheimer’s to go outside.

But Paul, who lives with his mother in a five-bedroom house, said he has not seen residents look at the fowl.

He complained to the care home in Battle, East Sussex, which, as a result, removed the cockerels last month, telling Paul they had been taken to a nearby farm to be put down. But last week one cockerel was brought back to the grounds, which ruffled Paul’s feathers so much staff called police.

Paul claims the home has “returned the nosiest one from the flock” and staff are ignoring his request to get the cockerel removed. Paul said: “It’s literally destroyed me. I can’t get more than four hours of uninterrupted sleep.

“I shouted, ‘Not that cockerel. Why bring back that rooster?’ I just couldn’t believe it.” Paul says that he and his 78-year-old mother will “continue to have no quality of life” until the cockerel is removed. Cedarwood House boss Ty Yalmaz said itook the complaint “to heart” and had had six of the birds put down but had sent one cockerel to a nearby farm. “We have had to report the matter to the police to help protect our staff, who are really concerned,” he said. “When you are not doing something wrong and being accused of doing something wrong, what can you do? We hope this can get resolved.”
