Will the judges poo-poo Rylan’s Bake Off effort?

- By Mark Jefferies

BAKE OFF contestant Rylan Clark-Neal looks set to be panned tonight – when he presents the judges with a creation that looks like something left in the toilet.

The lumpy brown mixture is supposed to represent a rock formation in the sea as part of a scene showing the former X Factor star’s “happy place” in the world.

But before handing his meringue “showstopper” over to Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith, Rylan moans: “It does look like poo.”

Host Sandi Toksvig cannot suppress a grin as she warns the judges may “poo-poo” his creation.

The 30-year-old is one of four contestants on the second episode of The Great British Bake Off for Stand Up To Cancer which airs tonight.

In it he will try to win an apron for Star Baker, facing competition from comedian James Acaster, Coronation Street actress Michelle Keegan and Being Human’s Russell Tovey.

The celebrities face three tough challenges set by Prue and Paul.

First they must bake topped flapjacks for the signature challenge.

This is followed by a tricky technical and a meringue showstopper challenge which recreates their happy place.

Appearing on Channel 4, Rylan said Bake Off was one of his favourite shows but admitted he had not done much preparation. He explained: “I haven’t had time to practise because I’m building a house and have not got the kitchen in it yet.

“I thought I could bake and then I came here.

“Nobody taught me, so the only person I have to blame is myself for this entire experience.”

Rylan praised the Stand Up To Cancer campaign, saying: “It’s something that has affected probably everyone, whether it’s a close or a distant friend or relative.

“The great thing is it doesn’t take itself too seriously.

“This is out there, we’re going to help sort it out and we’re going to have a laugh while we do it.”

Launched in the UK in 2012, the national campaign for Cancer Research UK and Channel 4 raises funds for translational research, accelerating new cancer treatments and tests for patients to save more lives, more quickly.

More than £38million has been raised in the UK to date and 35 trials and projects have been funded, with about 8,000 cancer patients either participating or due to participate.

● The Great British Bake Off for Stand Up To Cancer airs tonight on Channel 4 at 8pm.
