was Mr Pomeroy saying, “I have never dealt with someone with special needs before”, she said.

Pencille then said, “I am hearing voices right now”, and picked up a phone. Ms Carter heard him say, “I am going to kill this man”, but did not think the call was real.

She said both men were saying they were going to fight at the next station, eventually becoming “really up and personal”, adding: “Neither of them were backing down.”

Ms Carter said the argument continued, with Pencille “really shouting”, and she saw Pencille strike Mr Pomeroy first. “I saw blood straight away,” she said.

The court heard Mr Pomeroy, of Guildford, who would have been 52 the day after the “quick and frenzied attack”, was stabbed 18 times in 25 seconds. When the train stopped at Clandon, Pencille went into a wooded area, past Rowena Dodwell’s home. He told her he had been in an accident and needed to return to work.

The jury heard Pencille’s girlfriend, Chelsea Mitchell, 27, later picked him up and bought hair clippers and razors for him to change his appearance.

His ex- partner and the mother of his child, Sarah Fry, said via video link that Pencille rang her that night and said: “I have done something bad today, you’ll see it in the news.”

Pencille’s mother, Ingrid Robertson, told the court that in his 20s, she was told he was a paranoid schizophrenic, had a “fear of crowds”, and struggled on public transport.

Pencille, of no fixed address, denies murder, and Mitchell, of Farnham, Surrey, denies assisting an offender. The trial continues.
