Twell became the first Briton to claim the annual title since Paula Radcliffe triumphed in

The victory represented one of the highlights of Twell’s career, which in 2011 was threatened by injury.

The Scot suffered a triple-fracture of her right ankle and was out of action for a year, missing the London Olympics. She also lost her lottery funding, but on Saturday night the 29-year-old produced a commanding performance, winning in a Europeanleading time of 31mins 8.13secs. Fellow Scot Eilish McColgan – watched by mother Liz, a former world champion over the distance – finished third in a time of 31:16.76, inside the qualifying mark for the World Championships.
