Grooming

Some shouted: “Arrest the judge.” After he was driven to jail, dozens of Robinson supporters marched on Westminster where they chanted: “Shame on you.”

Westminster Bridge was temporarily blocked but the demonstrators were kept away from the gates of Parliament by a heavy police presence.

Some protesters attacked BBC crews, breaking light stands on the ground on College Green.

Robinson, of Luton, had denied contempt of court.

He was originally jailed for 13 months and served 10 weeks in jail before being freed after the original finding of contempt was overturned by the Court of Appeal in August 2018. But the case was referred back to the Attorney General, who announced in March that it was in the public interest to bring fresh proceedings against Robinson.

The activist had filmed defendants in the sex grooming case and also confronted the men while live-streaming the video on his Facebook page. The film was eventually viewed 3.4 million times.

His actions breached a legal directive which postponed reporting of the case until the end of a series of trials involving 29 accused men.

Tried under his real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, Robinson insisted he did not breach the reporting restriction and only referred to information in the public domain.

But he was found guilty of contempt by two High Court judges sitting at the Old Bailey last week.

Wearing a T-shirt with the slogan, “Convicted Of Journalism” Robinson was sentenced to nine months behind bars by Mrs Justice Sharp. She ruled he had encouraged others “to harass a defendant by finding him, knocking on his door, following him, and watching him”.

This created “a real risk that the course of justice would be seriously impeded”, she said.

Time he has previously spent in prison will cut his sentence to 19 weeks. He will spend half that time behind bars – just under 10 weeks.
