Elderly are systematically being let down all the time

-

HAVING read the article about the lack of police care for elderly victims, I have to say that the HMIC sample of crimes at 192 is hardly representative of the large number of crimes across the UK (“How lack of police care is letting down the elderly victims of crime”, July 17).

Perhaps they should expand the criteria to be more realistic and representative of the numbers of crimes recorded.

I retired at the end of February and would say that the police force for which I worked was extremely thorough in ensuring if victim support was required and that victims would be informed about the criminal justice process.

These questions formed part of the process of registering a crime and obtaining a number and were asked every time. There are also the processes for referral of victims to relevant agencies.

The biggest problem is the decimation of the police meaning they cannot deal with the volume of crimes and issues we used to prior to the cuts.

Any increase in officer numbers will take about three years to be beneficial once officers have been trained and gained experience. be looked at (“MPs savage BBC’s licence fee U-turn”, July 18).

Obviously the excessive wages given to many presenters is an issue for most.

Gary Lineker’s salary would fund approximately 11,000 licences, not an inconsiderable figure.

Might I suggest that the ridiculous and highly unpopular 0.7% GDP tax instigated by the government and sent abroad might be better used to fund the niggardly pensions paid to our citizens allowing them to pay for a voice in their homes.
