Ward’s Broncos buck the trend

-

LONDON BRONCOS kept their Super League survival hopes in their own hands with a 32-12 victory over leaders St Helens – and coach DannyWard insists there will be more “twists and turns” along the way.

The win over a second-string Saints, with Matty Fleming, right, scoring two tries, leaves the Broncos level on points with Leeds and Hull KR at the foot of the table, although Ward’s side sit bottom due to an inferior points difference.Ward said: “There have been ups and downs throughout the year and there are a few more twists and turns to come.

“They’ve got to stay tight as a group, you’ve got to have everyone working together to achieve that big goal. “Our fate is entirely within our hands, but we can’t afford to get carried away with winning today.” Steve Price called for an urgent response from his Warrington players in Saturday’s Challenge Cup semi-final against Hull after yesterday’s 27-18 loss to Castleford. It was Wolves’ fourth defeat in six games, putting their second spot in the Super League in jeopardy.

Price said: “We have got to be better than that. It was a difficult defeat to take. When you’re dishing up that amount of errors you’re never going to give yourself a chance.”

Salford thumped play-off rivals Catalan Dragons 40-14, with Kris Welham scoring twice, and coach Ian Watson said: “Kris was outstanding – it was his 300th career appearance and I thought the two tries really capped it off for him.”
