Dillian’s shot at Wilder is far from black and white

- By David Anderson

DILLIAN WHYTE fears another world-title stitch-up – despite becoming the WBC’s mandatory challenger.

Whyte won the vacant interim WBC heavyweight title with a unanimous points win over the previously unbeaten Oscar Rivas on Saturday night.

He is now first in line to challenge for DeontayWilder’s WBC belt and the sanctioning body say he will get his shot by next May. But Whyte is worried he may be hurt by politics.

Wilder must first fight Luis Ortiz in November before a spring rematch with Tyson Fury. And Whyte is concerned he may be ignored again, having already been the WBC’s No1 contender for more than 600 days. “This is boxing,” said Whyte. “People talk a lot but, when it comes to it, not a lot gets done.

“I’m the mandatory challenger now but I’ve already been the No1 contender for over 600 days. Maybe being mandatory means I have to wait another 600 days.

“I’m doing everything I can. I’m not hiding from nobody. I’ve won every fight they have asked me to win.”

Eddie Hearn wants to make sure

Whyte is not overlooked again, certain the fighter’s moment will come next year.

“We need to keep pressing the WBC and ensure they keep to their resolution,” said Hearn. “He may have to wait a bit longer but, if he does, it won’t be the end of the world because we now know he will be getting a shot at the world title.” Whyte will fight an easier foe at the end of the year, after beating Rivas, Dereck Chisora (twice), Joseph Parker and Lucas Browne in his past seven bouts.
