Gough tipping captain to move upstairs while Buttler leads on pitch

have broken their duck at the World Cup, this team is going to take some stopping.

“Realistically, I don’t think Eoin is going to be around as a player – he’ll be 36 by the time the next one comes round – but it might be a good thing if he stays on as captain for a year or two to help with the transition. But even better for me would be to put him in charge of the one-day side as coach, the man who calls the shots.”

Gough thinks Morgan and Jos Buttler can become the perfect double act for England’s one-day team. He said: “I’ve always believed there should be separate England coaches for Test and one-day cricket.

“With Trevor Bayliss stepping down at the end of this summer, Chris Silverwood should get the job for Test matches – and I’d like to see Eoin become England’s one-day coach.

“It’s a role he would fit into brilliantly. He is so well-respected in that dressing room and it would maintain a smooth line of communication between him and Jos Buttler. They would both just step one rung up the ladder.

“Jos would take one-day captaincy would be my ideal my dream ticket.”

Gough believes Morgan has earned the right to decide when he turns in his officer’s pips.

And he is unlikely to top his record barrage of 17 sixes in a one-day international innings against Afghanistan at Old Trafford last month.

Gough said: “It’s Eoin’s decision whether he decides to carry on or not.

“He has just won the World Cup for England – if he decides to step down, he deserves to go out on his terms.

“He might surprise us all and keep going to the next one but you look at the team he has built and they should be favourites to win it again.” over the and that scenario –
