It’s not about me, insists Holbrook

- Julie Stott

JUSTIN HOLBROOK will not let doubts over his future hinder St Helens’Wembley dream.

Saints head into Saturday’s Challenge Cup semi-final against Halifax with huge uncertainty surrounding their head coach.

NRL side Gold Coast Titans, having sacked their coach this month, are tracking Holbrook who is out of contract at the end of the season

St Helens want him to stay, and Holbrook has said: “The quicker it gets sorted out, one way or another, the better so that it doesn’t become a distraction.

“I do not want it to be about me.This is a great club and it should be about the club and the players, not me.”

Holbrook denied having had an interview with the Titans but said: “I have put myself in this position so the quicker it is sorted out, then we don’t have to worry about it.”

Saints suffered a shock semi-final defeat to eventual winners Catalans last year and Holbrook is taking no chances this time.

He left 10 players out of Sunday’s league loss to London, resting them for the Championship part-timers.

He added: “We were happy to draw Halifax but there is no danger of taking anything for granted. We know the importance of it.

“Last year was a failure. We have been waiting a long time for another chance to get to Wembley.”

Halifax star man Scott Murrell is a slight doubt after suffering whiplash at Dewsbury on Sunday.

Coach Simon Grix said: “He is stiff and cannot move his head but he was saying he would be all right.”
