I am clean. You’re a loser. I win, yeah? Chinese drug cheat’s furious rant after Scott protest

- Matthew Dunn

British bronze medallist Scott, 22, finished joint-fourth with Martin Malyutin in yesterday’s final but was promoted to a medal position when Danas Rapsys was disqualified for a false start after touching home first.

That decision gave Sun his second gold of the meeting, but as he celebrated in his lane there were loud boos from the South Korean crowd, provoking a reaction from the 27-year-old.

Then at the medal ceremony, when his name was called to take his gold medal, Sun shouted at Scott – who had already collected his bronze – and shook his fist in the Briton’s direction while appearing to say: “I am clean.”

Scott then refused to shake Sun’s hand and stood apart while the other three medallists posed for pictures.

Sun again reacted, waving his fingers at Scott as he passed by before turning to shout: “You’re a loser! I win, yeah?” On Sunday, Australia’s Mack Horton was warned by swimming governing body FINA after refusing to step on the podium to collect his silver medal after being beaten by Sun in the 200m freestyle final. They said in a letter to Horton: “While FINA respects the principle of freedom of speech, it has to be conducted in the right context.”

In 2014, Sun served a three-month ban after testing positive for a banned stimulant, while claims he was last year involved in destroying a doping test sample are soon to be heard by the Court Arbitration for Sport.

“I’m team Mack,” Scott said after his protest. “If Sun can’t respect our sport then why should I respect him? I think a lot of people, everyone in swimming, got behind what Mack did. Hopefully this will happen in more events.” Sun races again in the 800m freestyle final tonight and is expected to be involved in the relays later this week. Tonight will also feature Britain’s Adam Peaty attempting to claim gold in the 50m breaststroke final after breezing through his semi-final in 26.11secs.

Having blitzed the field in the 100m final a day after setting a new world record, Peaty was more than half a second faster than any of his 50m rivals. He will also have in his sights the 25.95secs world record he set at the World Championships in Budapest two years ago. of
