Exasperation

They said she had commented at a private event shortly after ex-prime minister David Cameron resigned.

“I think she’s really dismayed. I’ve heard her talking about her disappointment in the current political class and its inability to govern correctly,” it was reported.

“She expressed her exasperation and frustration about the quality of our political leadership, and that will only have grown.”

Tory MP Philip Davies said if the Queen’s view was as reported he believed she was “speaking for the overwhelming majority in the country”. “As an MP I despair about what has happened in Parliament over the last years,” he said.

Shadow chancellor John McDonnell last week said if the PM lost a confidence vote: “I don’t want to drag the Queen into this, but I would be sending Jeremy Corbyn in a cab to Buckingham Palace to say we’re taking over.” MILLIONS of special-edition 50p coins are set to be minted to cele- brate Brexit day under plans being drawn up by the Chancellor.

Sajid Javid has asked officials to find out if the coins can be produced in time for October 31.

Former chancellor Philip Hammond had planned to mint about 10,000 commemorative coins for collectors to buy at £10 each.

They would have taken up to eight weeks to be delivered.

But his successor wants to flood the country’s tills with them in a “one nation” celebration of Britain’s exit from the European Union, with many available on the day. The plans will be viewed as a sign that the Treasury is now fully behind Brexit after criticism that it was a hub for Remainers.

Each coin would carry the words, “Friendship with all nations”, as planned for the release in March, but they will be stamped with the new departure date.

A potential hurdle could be having the design signed off by the Queen’s Privy Council of ministers, which

Chancellor Sajid Javid is not due to meet until October. The Royal Mint regularly produces coins to mark major events.

A 50p was issued when Britain joined the European Economic Community in 1973 and when it held the EU presidency in 1998. Royal Mail bosses previously faced criticism for refusing to release a special Brexit stamp, including from Boris Johnson. He said last year: “Leaving the European Union will be a monumental moment in British history, so let’s deliver a commemorative stamp.”
