Paddington Bear coins it in for fresh adventures on the new 50p
COINS celebrating children’s favourite Paddington Bear are being released.
The new 50p designs showing the beloved character at the Tower of London and St Paul’s Cathedral will enter general circulation in the coming weeks, Royal Mint said.
The first “Paddington at the Tower” coins will be placed in tills at the Royal Mint Experience in Llantrisant, South Wales from today. The St Paul’s design will follow soon.
The latest pair of coins from Royal Mint follow the release of two others in 2018 to mark the 60th anniversary of the marmalade sandwich-loving bear, created by Michael Bond.
Last year’s 50p pieces also showed Paddington visiting London landmarks – his namesake railway station and Buckingham Palace.
Nicola Howell, of Royal Mint, said: “Following the huge popularity of the coins featuring the much-loved bear last year, we thought it was only right that Paddington continued his adventures around London on UK coinage.
“Paddington Bear is a massive part of British popular culture and is a favourite amongst fans of all ages, who we’re sure will be looking out for him in their change.”
Royal Mint will sell a £10 brilliant finish Paddington coin, a £60 coloured silver, and £850 gold version online.
WITH its heptagonal design and satisfying pocket-feel, the 50p coin has long been the UK’s most charming coin. Now, new 50p bits have been released showing national treasure Paddington Bear visiting the Tower of London and St Paul’s Cathedral, following Paddington coins last year marking the bear’s 60th anniversary.
They’ll no doubt become collectable – but for the cost price, you’re unlikely to get much change from a marmalade sandwich.
