A COUPLE have revealed how they became millionaires thanks to their lucky ginger tom cat Shortcake.

Andy Hancock hit the jackpot after rushing out to buy a tin of cat food from a petrol station after coming home late from work.

The catering director said he filled up the car with fuel and bought a £5 Monopoly Millionaire scratchcard at the till. But he couldn’t believe what he was seeing when he sat in his vehicle and scratched off the lucky symbol winning £1million.

“I looked and looked again and started to get a bit hot when I realised I won. I checked it about seven or eight times,” he said.

The 46-year-old from Mansfield in Nottinghamshire drove straight home to break the news to his 43-year-old wife, Paula, and son Xavier, 12.

Paula, said: “He came home and shouted ‘Paula, Xavier, come quick’.We both ran in and he was just stood there with his legs wide and his arms in the air saying ‘I’ve won £1million’.”

They ended up “jumping up and down and crying with joy” when their win was confirmed. They celebrated by drinking Pimm’s until the early hours of the morning and planning how to spend the windfall.

But Andy admits on the night he bought the scratchcard he totally forgot why he had gone to the garage in the first place and did not pick up the cat food after all.

Shortcake, described as a “very fussy cat who loves a cuddle”, made do with a tin of ham instead.

From now on though, he will be getting an upgrade on everything – even though he “already lives the life of luxury”. “If it wasn’t for Shortcake, we wouldn’t be millionaires,” said Paula.

ANOTTINGHAMSHIRE family discovered it really pays to give your cat attention. Andrew Hancock realised he had forgotten to stock up on cat food – and when he stopped at a petrol station to buy some chicken Whiskers he bought a winning scratchcard with a £1million prize.

The jubilant Hancock family let their ginger tom cat, Shortcake, enjoy a tin of ham that night. He deserved it. Their cat really brought home the bacon.
