Potholes problem runs deep

Police are not treating it as a terror incident. “These ROADS across England are in such a poor condition that motorists are reporting a pothole every 46 seconds.

Last year 700,000 potholes and road defects were reported.

And councils have had to pay out £1.9billion in compensati­on to drivers of damaged vehicles.

Earlier this year the Government announced an extra £201million for English councils to repair roads. But the annual Asphalt Industry Alliance Alarm survey warned that nearly £10billion is still needed.

Mike Cherry, national chairman of the Federation of Small Businesses, said: “These figures show just how widespread the issue is.

“It’s clear that the Government and local authoritie­s need to sit up and take notice.”

He called for more local authority funding and better planning between councils and utility companies to reduce the number of times roads are dug up.

The FSB said £1billion was spent on local road repairs last year.
