PICKS OF THE DAY

-

Sport: Cricket On 5: The Ashes, Channel 5, 7pm

English cricket fans will have a lingering fear that the image on the left might be repeated time and time again this summer. Steve Smith, the disgraced former Australia captain, won the first Test single-handedly at Edgbaston with a stunning century in either innings. If Joe Root’s side cannot find a way to get the belligerent right-hander out quicker then The Ashes might well be heading Down Under at the end of the series. Lord’s – the home of cricket – is the venue for the second Test and England must put things right in a hurry otherwise the urn will be out of reach. James Anderson’s injury could open the door to World Cup hero Jofra Archer.

Film: Me Before You, Channel 5, 10.30pm

Those who have never seen Me Before You need to be warned that you are not just watching a film but rather going on an emotional journey. A woman is hired as a carer for an embittered man who has been paralysed for the past two years following a motorcycle accident. She tries to show him he still has something to live for, but he fears becoming a burden and considers ending his life. Romantic drama, starring Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin (both left).

This episode follows the investigation into the disappearance and subsequent murder of 47-year-old Julie Reilly, who went missing from her Govan flat in March 2018. Andrew Wallace is currently serving a mandatory life sentence for the crime.

Religion: Sacred Wonders, BBC1, 9pm

Meanwhile in Mali, a young Muslim man helps to replaster Djenné’s Great Mosque (above) in the hope of a place in paradise. At The Cathedral of Saint John the Divine in New York, an Anglican priest fronts an astonishing ceremony.

Animals: Animal Rescue Live: Supervet Special, C4, 8pm

Jamie Laing – recently announced as being part of the next batch of brave celebrities to take part in Strictly Come Dancing – adds his weight to the campaign to raise much-needed funds for thousands of homeless animals.
