Klopp: I’ll take anything I can

- Matthew Dunn

JURGEN KLOPP says it is quantity of trophies not the quality that matters now for Liverpool as he looks to claim his second European honour in just over two months.

In the past, Liverpool’s European Super Cup successes would not have been given much consideration alongside the league titles and mainstream European trophies.

But the German, right, is hurt that – having conquered Europe, the 30-year wait for a domestic league success is the gap in the trophy cabinet that still matters most at Anfield.

So he now wants to cram the glass display case with as much silverware as he can get his hands on. “I am not good enough to prioritise trophies,” he said ahead of the European Super Cup clash with Chelsea.

“I had to take what I could get. We didn’t decide last year to go for the Champions League and ignore the Premier League.

“We just try and win the next football game – and that is difficult enough. I am not a genius, so I take what I can.”

It is a sign of how healthy a state the club are in that the focus is no longer on whether Liverpool can win a title – but how many they can get. Klopp, who saw his side narrowly beaten in the FA Community Shield at Wembley, said: “We had a good game against Manchester City and gave them a proper game before losing on penalties.

“We won one competition last year, that’s all. This is another chance for us. It was important against Manchester City we were there to win the game and there was a chance for us. If we had been lucky, we could have one already.”

Ever since Bill Shankly won the league and UEFA Cup double in 1973, only to point to the first one and declare it Liverpool’s “bread and butter”, the mandate was set.

Another trophy will add to Klopp’s hero-worship on Merseyside, but it is the Premier League that will give him legendary status.

It was put to him in his press conference that, according to Jose Mourinho, this would finally be Liverpool’s year.

“Jose Mourinho said that?” Klopp replied. “When? 2012? I did not hear him and it makes no sense to talk about things people are supposed to have said. If he said it, it is his opinion.

“It does not help does not disturb us.” us, it
