Tigers must keep power on to fulfil dream warns Watts

- By Gareth Walker

LIAM WATTS has urged Castleford to keep their foot on the pedal in the race for a top-five spot.

Daryl Powell’s side moved into the box seat for the play-offs with an impressive Thursday night demolition of rivals Hull FC.

But the Tigers can still drop out of the five if they lose at Wigan on Friday and the Black and Whites shock leaders St Helens at home.

And front rower Watts has stressed that Cas can take nothing for granted.

Watts said: “It all goes down to next week. Hull won’t lie down against St Helens, there’s still a chance for them – every chance.

“It comes down to Wigan for us – we have to beat Wigan.

“In the past we’ve had some cracking games there but been on the end of some losses. We need to go about it in the same way we did against Hull.

“Before the game we spoke about being on home turf, it being our place, our ground. It was the last game of the season at home and I thought we had the right intentions.

“We knew what challenges were in front of us and spoke about it quite a lot. We’re going to have to be at our best for the remainder of the season or we’ll be out of it.

“But we’re showing some commitment to each other in defence.”

The Tigers have conceded just four tries in their last four matches, and with talented stand-off Jake Trueman scoring a sparkling hat-trick, have rediscovered their mojo with the ball. They are also being led from the front by the maturing Watts, who has made more metres than any prop in Super League this season, earning him a call-up to the Great Britain training squad.

That does not include NRL players and will be reduced before the Lions head to New Zealand and Papua New Guinea – but Watts, 29, is hopeful of securing a place on the plane.

He added: “That’s something I wanted to get this year.

“I know it’s going to get whittled down but I’ll give myself every chance to get in there and get picked.

“I’ve been in squads when I was a young kid at 19 and I think I was on the wrong side of it – I probably didn’t appreciate it as much as I do now.

“I’m pleased with my form at the minute and long may that continue.”
