Sorry, Rash, but you will never be a natural goalscorer says Owen

- By David Maddock

MARCUS RASHFORD lacks the killer instinct of a natural-born scorer - and can never learn it.

That is the view of Michael Owen, who stands fifth on England’s all-time list for goals.

Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate wants Rashford to score more times for his country but

Owen, below, believes the Manchester United forward simply is not wired that way.

“I don’t think he is obsessed with goals,” said the former Liverpool and United striker.

“He is a better all-round player than me, he has a great touch and all-round skill that I never had, but he hasn’t got the killer instinct I had. I was obsessed...but I don’t think scoring goals is what he goes to bed craving.

“Players like Robbie Fowler, Sergio Aguero or Harry Kane, these are people who are obsessed with goals. ”

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes he can teach Rashford to become more of a poacher, but Owen is sceptical.

Asked if a striker can ever develop that instinct without having it within, Owen said: “No. You can definitely improve your finishing, but I don’t think you can improve your instinct.

“And I don’t think you can improve the way you are made. I know Rashford was never a centre-forward as a kid, he always wanted to play wide or as a No10.

“I know his coaches at the United academy were always encouraging him to follow the ball in, get tap-ins and get in the box, be a goalscorer. It was never really his desire, he was always outside the box, with a great touch and everything else.”

The former England striker is promoting his new book, ‘Reboot – Michael Owen, My Life, My Time’. He said: “I am trying not to cause a headline again because he will, in my opinion, always score a decent number of goals and he is an absolutely wonderfully talented player.

“But when you mention Aguero, that cold-blooded, constantly thinking about goals, I don’t think [Rashford has that].”
