BRITAIN IS STILL BACKING BORIS

Despite the constitutional crisis, our poll shows:

- By Martyn Brown

BORIS Johnson is handed a big vote of confidence today as the public say he is the best man to deliver Brexit.

He is the only party leader who

can get us out of the EU, according to an exclusive poll for the Daily Express.

His soaring popularity trounces that of Jeremy Corbyn. The Labour chief only manages 17 per cent in the survey from OnePoll.

In a further illustration of the hapless leadership shown by Mr Corbyn the poll showed that a third of Labour supporters feel he has betrayed them by changing his position on Brexit.

Mr Johnson will today try for a second time to trigger a snap general election as he urges MPs to support going to the country on October 15. It is hoped that an election will break the parliamentary Brexit deadlock which has forced months of delays. And our poll shows the Conservatives would secure a resounding victory with 31 per cent of the vote compared with Labour’s 25 per cent.

The Liberal Democrats, who have been emboldened by recent defections, come third in the poll on 16 per cent. Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party is next on 14 per cent.

Despite publicly demanding a general election at least 35 times in the past two years Mr Corbyn has led a Remainer alliance to block an early ballot.

He does not want voters to have their say until a Brexit delay has been formally agreed with the EU to stop a clean break from Brussels. A Labour Bill aimed at stopping No Deal will gain Royal Assent today. This means Britain will be legally bound to ask Brussels for another Brexit extension. But France’s foreign minister Jean-Yves Le Drian and senior Eurocrat Guy Verhofstadt yesterday warned that the EU will refuse one.

Mr Johnson’s surging support comes amid chaos in Westminster after a week in which 21 Tory rebels were kicked out of the party, his brother Jo quit and Cabinet Minister Amber Rudd resigned.

But today’s poll bolsters belief that the Prime Minister is taking the correct approach to ensure Britain leaves the European Union properly and on time.

It reveals that 46 per cent of people back the PM in preparing the country for a no-deal Brexit in the hope it makes the EU renegotiate.

OnePoll’s survey – which contrasts 2017 voting intention with today – highlights how Labour is losing supporters to other parties because of its dithering over Brexit and its anti-semitic crisis. Some 11 per cent of the Brexit Party’s supporters have come from Labour.

Mr Farage’s party, which was only created six months ago, has seen 46 per cent of its supporters jump ship from the Tories, with 22 per cent coming from UKIP.

When it comes to Brexit it appears that even Labour supporters do not trust their leader.

Just 58 per cent say they want Mr Corbyn to manage the UK’s EU exit. Furthermore, only 56 per cent of Labour voters say the party’s decision to block Mr Johnson’s call for an election despite having a petition on their own site for one is a “logical reaction” to changing political circumstances. In another damning verdict on Mr Corbyn, the election guru John Curtice has warned that the Labour Party’s support has fallen by 16 points since 2017.

Mr Curtice said: “Labour could fall behind the Tories in many of their marginal seats, perhaps especially so where the constituency voted heavily for Leave.

“Mr Johnson’s single electoral achievement so far has been gradually to squeeze the support of the Brexit Party.

“It is that movement that has enabled him to secure a nine-point lead over Labour.

“He will hope to win over even more Brexiteers between now and election day. Not least perhaps by persuading them that a vote for Nigel Farage would be a wasted vote that could simply pave the way for a pro-Remain Labour government.”
