PICKS OF THE DAY

-

Documentary: Knives In The Classroom – Panorama, BBC1, 8.30pm

England is in the grip of a knife crime epidemic, there is no way of getting away from that. Schools, where children should feel at their absolute safest, are not immune from the problem. Here, Chanell Wallace (left), whose own brother was stabbed to death, meets young people growing up in communities where carrying a knife is normal and sees how violence from knife crime is turning lives upside down. This is truly harrowing to watch in places.

Soap: Coronation Street, ITV, 7.30pm & 8.30pm

Anyone who follows actress Katie McGlynn (above left) on social media will know her time as Sinead Tinker is coming to an end. McGlynn and the soap as a whole deserve credit for their work on this storyline. Tonight, Beth (Lisa George, above right) attempts to do her hair for her, only to discover a lump on Sinead’s neck. Later, she decides it is only right she tells Daniel of the discovery.

Crime drama: A Confession, ITV, 9pm

When the credits rolled last Monday night at the end of the opening part of A Confession, viewers seemed only to be talking about one thing. It was not the plot line, nor the performance of leading man Martin Freeman (left, with Joe Absolom). Sadly it was the rather ‘shaky’ camera work. We can only hope for a steadier showing this evening as the hunt for Sian O’Callaghan continues and Det Supt Steve Fulcher and his team see suspects come and go with no leads to follow. Local woman Karen Edwards notices that she only lives a few doors away from the missing girl’s mother, Elaine Pickford, but is only reminded of her own problems. Siobhan Finneran co-stars.

Documentary: Rise Of The Nazis, BBC2, 9pm

As the clock strikes 9pm, BBC2 viewers will be transported back to 1933. Adolf Hitler is chancellor of Germany but he does not have absolute power as there is still a democratic parliament, a head of state and the rule of law. He calls a general election to increase Nazi sway but a fire in the Reichstag building is blamed on communists. Kristupas Kavaliauskas and Vytis Indziulas (both above) star.

Film: Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, Film4, 9pm

The vigilante tries to save an army major who has been framed for murder and treason. He discovers that she has been targeted by a secret government conspiracy, and together they go on the run to expose the truth. Action thriller sequel based on Lee Child’s novel, starring Tom Cruise (right), Cobie Smulders and Danika Yarosh. Anyone who has not seen the original Jack Reacher film should not be put off this tonight as it is a standalone sequel that requires no background.
