What gave Kate and Mary a fit of the giggles?

- By Richard Palmer Royal Correspondent

THE Duchess of Cambridge opened a children’s garden yesterday, hurling herself into the theme with a spriggy-patterned dress and play date Mary Berry.

Kate, 37, has recycled elements of the garden she created at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show for the new attraction at RHS-Wisley.

The Back To Nature plot boasts a hidden burrow and wildflower meadow, treehouses and a “bouncing forest” where children can jump on trampolines surrounded by greenery.

The Duchess, who teamed up with Royal Horticultural Society ambassador and TV chef Mary, 84, planted a weeping blue cedar tree to open the Surrey garden.

Support

The pair also giggled through a tractor ride and chatted to families supported by some of Kate’s favourite charities.

In a speech to the crowds, the Duchess said she was passionate about creating a garden that inspired both children and adults “to get back to nature”.

Kate, whose dress was designed by Emilia Wickstead, is also working with supermarket Iceland to launch a Backyard Nature campaign to save the great outdoors.

Richard Walker, Iceland’s MD, said that from tomorrow the company would encourage children to tackle the “climate emergency”.

He added: “By offering free wildflower seedballs in our Iceland and The Food Warehouse stores, we will galvanise the nation to plant 15 million seeds to support wildflower meadows.

“I ask you to pick up a pack of free seedballs and speak to your children about why it’s important to take action now.”

THE Duchess of Cambridge and culinary legend Mary Berry together brought a unique blaze of sunshine to the country yesterday at the opening of a play garden co-created by the royal.

Their combined energy, charm and sheer radiance dazzled and delighted visitors to the famous Royal Horticultural Society centre in Wisley, Surrey.

In these challenging days we have special reason to treasure this marvellous duo, who bring colour, graciousness and fun into national life. Rather than grit their teeth and fret about the future, they remind us we have so much to smile about and celebrate.
