Van Dijk: Red-hot form must remain

- By Hector Nunns

VIRGIL VAN DIJK says there can be no let-up for Liverpool despite a sizzling start to the season.

The Reds top the table ahead of Manchester City after four straight wins.

Jurgen Klopp’s side missed out on a first league crown for 29 years by a single point last term and Van Dijk knows another huge effort will be required to keep Pep Guardiola’s men at bay this time.

Van Dijk said: “We want to keep going – and we want to win every game that is ahead of us now.

“It is very hard to say whether the same points total as last season would be enough this time. If you win your games, that is the only way to think.”

Van Dijk returns to domestic action with a home game against Newcastle on Saturday following an international break in which the defender helped Holland to Euro 2020 qualifying wins over Germany and Estonia, below.

Liverpool now have seven games before the October international qualifiers – four in the league, two in the Champions League and a Carabao Cup tie.

“We want to win any match, and so seven wins is the target,” said Van Dijk. “That’s what we have to try to do. “We know exactly how good Manchester City will be in the Premier League again this season. But there are also the other competitions where we can look to have success.

“In the next few weeks we will be playing Saturday-Tuesday almost all the time. There are some tough games. We have Chelsea away, and Napoli away in Europe.

“So we know how tough it is going to be, both this next period and the rest of the season. But we have the mentality and the players to win every game ahead of us.”
