PICKS OF THE DAY

-

Reality: First Dates Hotel, C4, 9pm

In the FD hotel tonight philosophy student Finn has primary school teacher Georgia (left) firmly in his sights. The only problem is, these two are destined to be matched up with other dates. The path to true love is never easy, we know that. Meanwhile, radio station manager Paul and cruise ship dancer Anna find an instant connection as they get to know each other – only for their budding romance to be threatened by a secret that Paul is reluctant to reveal.

Film: The Ladykillers, Film4, 5pm

Anyone who liked the 2004 remake of this, starring Tom Hanks, should forget everything they know about the film, get the TV tuned to Film4 at 5pm and sit through the original, which is a work of art. With Alec Guinness (above right) in imperious form as Professor Marcus, this is Ealing comedy at its finest. A criminal mastermind and his gang come up with a cunning scheme to steal a fortune, but their plan is threatened.

Documentary: Jesy Nelson: ‘Odd One Out’, BBC1, 9pm

Jesy Nelson of Little Mix fame has always dealt admirably with the online abuse she has been subjected to since rising to prominence on The X Factor in 2011. As they became famous, Jesy (left, with anti-bullying campaigner Hannah Adams) was targeted online for being “the fat one”. In this personal documentary, the singer opens up about the impact cyberbullies had on her life and the effect on her mental health. Her fellow Little Mix members Perrie, Leigh-Anne and Jade discuss how Jesy’s torment affected the band, while her boyfriend, Love Island star Chris Hughes, recalls falling in love with someone damaged by a barrage of negativity.

Travel: Billy Connolly’s Great American Trail, ITV, 9pm

How nice it is to see Billy Connolly on our screens still, despite all his recent health issues. The lovable Scot (above) visits Kearny in New Jersey, where he discovers it was the Scots who brought football to America. He then embarks on a pilgrimage to the Martin guitar company – the factory that has built guitars for some of the biggest rock stars on the planet, including Billy’s hero Hank Williams.

Soap: EastEnders, BBC1, 7.30pm

It has been a busy week in Walford and tonight Bobby is left distraught after Rainie reveals the truth about her night with Ian and decides it is best if she leaves the Square. But, ominously, worse is still to come. Daniel tries to distract Jean ahead of her operation, Chantelle’s nerves threaten her chances of winning the competition and Phil (Steve McFadden, right) overhears Sonia speaking to Bianca about the fact she is barely seeing her and decides to send them an anonymous gift.
