‘Forget about all the records – we just want to win titles’

- By John Cross

JORDAN HENDERSON says Liverpool are not interested in breaking records – just winning titles.

Liverpool are on a clubrecord run of 15 straight Premier League wins, have become the first club to win their opening six games in consecutive seasons and set a new club mark of seven straight away wins.

Jurgen Klopp’s men are rewriting the history books as they sweep all before them but, after narrowly missing out on the title to Manchester City last season, captain Henderson says that trophies are the only goal.

“Winning is important, picking up as many points and if you keep on doing that then the records will follow,” he said.

“You can’t go and chase records because they will come with performances and if we keep winning. But, for us, the motivation is three points every time we play.”

Liverpool were pushed to the limit by Chelsea on Sunday and by the end were hanging on for their 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge. “Chelsea was a really tough place to come,” said Henderson. “We had to grind it out, had to give everything and that shows what we’re about as a team.

“It’s important, you need character and we’ve got plenty of characters in this team to fight and see games out.

“It was tough, they put a lot of pressure on us and we just need to keep winning, keep getting three points.”

That was in contrast to City’s swashbuckling 8-0 win over Watford on Saturday – a result that made everyone sit up and take notice.

It is clear Pep Guardiola’s men will not surrender their title without a huge fight as the Premier League is shaping up to be another two-horse race. But Henderson stressed that Liverpool were not worried by City’s eight-goal victory. He said: “No, for us, it’s about what we need to do. All our focus is on ourselves, we can’t worry about anyone else. “The next game will always be the biggest game, we’ll not worry about any other team.” Meanwhile, Henderson feels Trent Alexander-Arnold could be the best dead-ball specialist in the top flight.

The right-back set the Reds on their way to victory at Chelsea with a free-kick rocket. Henderson said: “It was a fantastic finish. It’s tough (to think of anyone better) because he has a great strike on him.”
