Don’t Go Hating My Art...Elton and Rod in tiff over ’greed’

- By Steph Spyro

THEY have always had a lovehate relationship – but after

50 years of winding each other up, Sir Elton John and Sir Rod Stewart have fallen out.

Sir Rod claims his music chum stopped talking to him after he branded his three-year retirement tour a “moneygrabbing opportunity”.

He also said that Rocketman

– Sir Elton’s big screen biopic – was “not very flattering” and did not compare to Bohemian Rhapsody, the 2018 film about Freddie Mercury.

Sir Rod, 74, revealed the tiff in a radio interview.

He said: “I do love Elton, only we’re not talking at the moment. We’ve had a spat.”

Sir Elton’s Farewell Yellow

Brick Road tour began in the US in September 2018.

At the time, Sir Rod appeared on a US

TV show to say the 300-show plan “stinks of selling tickets” and was

“not rock ’n’ roll”.

He said: “I’ve never spoken about retirement and if I do retire, I won’t make an announcement.

I’ll just fade away.” The singer later apologised to his old friend for what he said.

They first met in the 1970s, when they gave each other drag names – composer Sir Elton was Sharon while Sir Rod was Phyllis.

In a joint interview in 1983, the competitive pair confirmed they were actually “very good friends”, but Sir Elton, 72, admitted they were “all right until we both get in the top 10”.

Their rivalry reached its peak in 1985 when Sir Elton hired a sniper armed with an air rifle to shoot down huge football-shaped blimps that were advertising Sir Rod’s London shows. The latter got his revenge in the capital almost a year later when Sir Elton’s massive promotional banners were mysteriously cut down.

The Circle Of Life singer revealed Sir Rod called him and said: “Such a shame about your banner, love. I heard it wasn’t even up five minutes. I bet you didn’t even get to see it.” Sailing star Sir Rod is currently performing around the UK, Sir Elton’s farewell tour starts again next year.
