US detectives ‘want to interview Prince in Britain’

- By Richard Palmer Royal Correspondent

THE FBI wants to interview Prince Andrew about his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein, according to sources in the US Department of Justice.

Agents investigating allegations that Epstein was helped by others in a sex trafficking ring are considering ways of interviewing the Duke of York in Britain.

A Source at the US justice department said: “There have been active discussions between the FBI and Department of Justice about interviewing Prince Andrew in relation to the Jeffrey Epstein case.

“If he agrees to an interview, he could potentially provide some very unique and helpful insights and make a considerable difference to the investigation.”

The US authorities may also want to question Andrew’s Scotland Yard bodyguards who have accompanied him everywhere at an estimated cost to the taxpayer of £2million a year.

Andrew, 59, will not be keen to travel to the US where there is a risk that lawyers for the female victims may seek to subpoena him to give evidence in their pursuit of civil claims for damages.

The FBI itself is keeping its cards close to its chest amid suspicions that Epstein’s former girlfriend, Ghislaine Maxwell may have agreed to give evidence.

She has been accused of recruiting young girls to have sex with Epstein and his wealthy friends – something she denies.

Andrew said he first met Epstein through his long friendship with Ms Maxwell, 57, the daughter of disgraced newspaper tycoon Robert Maxwell. She has not been seen in public since August 15.
