Farage is planning a £100,000 Parliament Square knees-up
NIGEL Farage is planning to throw a £100,000 party to celebrate Brexit in Parliament Square on January 31.
The MEP said he was inviting a wide-range of people and it was “not going to be very political”.
Singing
He urged London Mayor Sadiq Khan to give permission for it to go ahead.
The Brexit Party leader said: “There will be people from across the spectrum, there’ll be business people, entertainers, there’ll be music, there’ll be singing. I’m going to be there celebrating because for me, it’s a victory of the little people over the establishment.”
The festivities will be organised under the crossparty Leave Means Leave banner. Up to 10,000 members of the public are expected and need to apply for tickets online so they can be vetted to deter troublemakers.
Richard Tice, chair of the
Brexit Party who is jointly applying for permission, said he hoped for the Greater London Authority’s green light this week. He said: “Brexiteers should celebrate this historic moment in our nation’s democratic history.
Enthusiastic
“Parliament Square, under the watchful eye of Churchill, is the right place to lead the commemorations.” Mr Tice said donors were “very enthusiastic” about sponsoring the event. He said: “We want it to be extraordinarily affordable/almost zero.”
Next week MPs will debate an amendment tabled by Eurosceptic MPs who want Big Ben to be legally required to “bong” Britain out of the EU at 11pm on January 31.
Previous attempts were blocked by ex-Commons speaker John Bercow, who also chaired the body that presides over the Great Bell in Parliament’s Elizabeth Tower.
