PICKS OF THE DAY

-

Transport: The Metro: A Rail Life Story, ITV, 7.30pm

Football fans plus public transport equals chaos – that is simple maths. In the second episode of this charming series following life aboard the Metro in Newcastle, we reach the first day of the Premier League season. That means something in the region of 10,000 Geordies making their way to St James’ Park using the service. As if that wasn’t enough, they are not happy with club owner Mike Ashley and want to make sure their protestations are heard. Metro customer service manager Steve (left) and his assistant, daughter Lauren, have to help to get them from A to B. Elsewhere, a guide horse undergoes training.

Health: Losing It: Our Mental Health Emergency, C4, 10pm

Here we follow NHS staff in Nottinghamshire – like Richard Marsh (left) – as they deal with emergency mental health cases, including a woman with no history of mental illness who developed postpartum psychosis, and attempted to kill herself, her husband and their newborn baby by driving into a wall. The child and adolescent mental health team see a girl suffering from panic attacks, suicidal thoughts and full-body seizures.

Documentary: Ben Fogle: New Lives In The Wild, Channel 5, 9pm

We are well into the 11th series of Mr Fogle’s globetrotting adventures and Ben (above) arrives in New Zealand for this instalment, meeting Lucy – who left Britain to start a new life with her husband Tim on the north island. They now live with their two daughters in a yurt beside a river in the middle of 25 acres of woodland they have transformed into a farm.

Soap: EastEnders, BBC1, 7.30pm

Linda’s drinking has been escalating for weeks now, putting a huge strain on her marriage. Tonight, the knock-on effects of it come to the fore when she and husband Mick visit Ollie’s school. After a shocking revelation is made, could the couple (Kellie Bright and Danny Dyer, both above) be about the lose their son? Linda is furious with the position she finds herself in but that is not going to help the situation.

Crime: Bad Girls Behind Bars, Channel 5, 10pm

The segregation pod of Western Massachusetts Regional Women’s Correctional Centre is not for the faint-hearted, to put it mildly. Kept there are some of the facility’s most dangerous inmates, including Melyza Rojas (right). When one of them attacks an officer, it takes all available staff to restrain her, and Sergeant Clayton begins an investigation into the assault. In a rather unusual case, a Satanist complains that she struggles to practice her religion behind bars.
