GOLDEN CHILD
Mother of all comebacks for Kenny
LAURA KENNY will go for an incredible hat-trick of Olympic titles at the Tokyo 2020 Games – with the help of a Facebook support group for sporting mums.
Britain’s greatest female Olympian, already with four gold medals, intends to compete in the team pursuit, omnium and madison events in Japan this summer.
And to help her cope with the workload – on top of looking after two-year-old son Albie – Kenny has joined the Mothers in Elite Sport network, set up by Team GB’s athletes’ commission to provide assistance with the demands of training, competing and parenthood.
Kenny, whose husband Jason has earned six Olympic titles since 2008 in the sprint and keirin events, is part of the British Cycling squad heading for a World Cup meeting in Canada this week.
The event will provide telling clues about her readiness for a triple assault on the podium in Tokyo. And the private Facebook group for British athletes wrestling with childcare and elite sport will offer her valuable assistance.
Kenny, 27, said: “Since Albie was born, I have had to find a different balance to my life.
“I used to get stressed out so much before racing but now I’m a mother who happens to ride a bike for a living – in that order. When I go home after training or a race, I’m a mum, not an athlete. It stops me over-thinking what I do on the bike.”
