Ancelotti: Toffees must be brave to play my way

- CHRIS McKENNA

CARLO ANCELOTTI wants Everton to be braver in implementing his style of football.

The Toffees manager has enjoyed a positive start to life at Goodison Park apart from an embarrassing FA Cup exit against Liverpool’s second-string.

They have won three Premier League games under the Italian with their only defeat against Manchester City and a draw againstWest Ham last weekend.

But Ancelotti, whose side face Newcastle tonight, said: “If you want to play at a certain level you have to be brave. You cannot be shy.You have to take responsibility and the players with more quality have to take responsibility. Here in general we have a young squad but players with a strong personality and players who are experienced like Fabian Delph and Theo Walcott, who can help the young to show more bravery.

“I told the players that if you are shy you cannot play football, you have to do something different. Against West Ham it was like this.”

There have been questions about whether the squad can deliver his style of play, but the Italian added: “I think this team has players with technical quality because I am not going to ask something that is impossible for them.” Richarlison (knee) will miss tonight’s match while Gylfi Sigurdsson is out with a groin injury. Newcastle boss Steve Bruce will have to direct his attention to a defender rather than new striker after Jetro Willems and Paul Dummett were both ruled out for the season.
