Maddison will show Canaries no mercy

- JAMES NURSEY

JAMES MADDISON will always be grateful to Norwich – but is ready to push the struggling Canaries closer to the drop.

Top-flight Norwich paid £3 million to snap up the talented teenage prospect from League One Coventry in January 2016.

The investment paid off handsomely in June 2018 when Norwich banked £22m from Leicester for Maddison to rebalance their finances.

The 23-year-old has since broken into the England squad and been offered a huge new deal by the Foxes.

Boss Brendan Rodgers is confident Maddison will show Norwich no mercy tonight as Leicester aim to maintain their push for the Champions League.

“In football you can’t really have sentiment,” Rodgers said. “He will always be thankful for the opportunity Norwich gave him because he was a young player out of League One.

“I also know his sale allowed Norwich the opportunity to bring in

Vfinance to stabilise the club, so it worked well for both.

“But he now will want to do the very best for Leicester.”

Maddison has six goals and three assists this term, sparking interest from a number of clubs including Manchester United.

But Rodgers believes Maddison will stay. He said: “I am hopeful it will be done. There is ongoing talks.”

Norwich boss Daniel Farke is eyeing a repeat of Leicester’s amazing escape five years ago. Farke’s basement boys have just four wins this season. In 2014-15, Leicester had also won only four times by early April, but claimed seven victories in their final nine games to beat the drop.

Farke said: “I remember it. It was a great run and shows that in football anything is possible.” NORWICH (probable): Krul; Aarons, Godfrey, Hanley, Lewis; Tettey, McLean; Buendia, Duda, Cantwell; Pukki. LEICESTER (probable): Schmeichel; Pereira, Evans, Soyuncu, Chilwell; Ndidi, Tielemans; Perez, Maddison, Barnes; Vardy.
