Bob Barron, 98, also fought at Arnhem, the Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes and was among the first troops to cross the Rhine into Germany.

The former Pioneer Corps soldier was presented with the Legion d’honneur in 2016 at Fulwood Barracks in his home town of Preston as a mark of gratitude from the French people.

At the time he insisted he had only played “a small role in a very large team effort”. He added: “I was lucky to survive the conflict without injury and I always remember, every day, my comrades and friends who weren’t so lucky.”

The Preston North End fan died in a care home where his bedroom overlooked his beloved Deepdale Stadium.

Nephew Michael Barron said: “He was someone who had a lot of fun and was a real character.”

Bob died after getting flu in January. His funeral will be held at Preston Crematorium on March 20 at 1pm.
