Barrymore hits out over ‘vicious’ TV death claims
MICHAEL Barrymore has attacked the Channel 4 documentary about the death of Stuart Lubbock at his home in 2001 as “vile and vicious”.
The 67-year-old entertainer told Good Morning Britain that Barrymore: The Body In The Pool, which aired last month, had left him in “pain and agony”.
He insisted that no one who was at his £2million home in Roydon, Essex, when Stuart apparently drowned knew how he died.
He said: “I’ve never seen them since that day... I haven’t got a number for them, nothing.
“I don’t know any of them. The wall of silence is because they don’t know [what happened]. I do believe that.”
Mistakes
His comments come as police relaunch an appeal for information as they believe Mr Lubbock, a divorced father of two, was raped and murdered.
Barrymore said he would welcome a fresh investigation into Mr Lubbock’s death, preferably not conducted by Essex Police which admitted they made mistakes during the original investigation.
Either way he said he had no new information that might help police unravel the mystery of the 31-yearold’s death.
Barrymore said: “I haven’t got another story. I honestly wish I did. I put myself through 20 years of hell. I don’t know anything.”
The former host of Strike It Lucky pulled out of ITV’s Dancing On Ice earlier this year due to injury, adding: “I’ve got nothing to hide. I’ve never had anything to hide. I’ve got every right to go out and be employed and work in the business I’ve worked in without... being kicked in the teeth just because I’m back on the telly.”
One person who’s not convinced by Barrymore’s claims is Terry Lubbock – Stuart’s father.
Barrymore said Terry’s grief “comes before me or anybody”, adding: “It doesn’t matter how bad I feel. I can’t live my life and get on with my life.”
Terry, meanwhile, was surprised to see the interview take place. He said: “The evidence is clear, there is no doubt my son was murdered. “Barrymore doesn’t seem to be accepting that fact. That surprised me. But I’m glad he’s done the interview. I want my son’s murder to stay in the public eye. This interview will help to do that.”
The 74-year-old also appealed to the eight people at the pool party to co-operate. He added: “Someone who was in that house knows what happened. I beg them. Come forward, talk to the police. Tell the truth. Get this off your conscience.”
