Devastatio­n as a top hospital consultant is killed by virus

A SENIOR NHS consultant is the first frontline health worker to die from Covid-19 it was confirmed last night.

Amged El-Hawrani was an ear, nose and throat specialist at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust.

The 55-year-old tested positive and died at Glenfield Hospital in Leicester on Saturday.

In a statement his family paid tribute to the doctor, saying: “Amged was a loving and much-loved husband, son, father, brother, and friend.

“Amged reached the very top of his profession and we know he made a difference to thousands of lives during his career.

“Losing Amged is devastatin­g for our family. Life without him is impossible to imagine.

“But together we will do all we can to honour his memory and live how he would have wanted us to.”

Amged worked at Queen’s Hospital, Burton, and trained junior ear, nose and throat doctors.

In his spare time he raised funds for the Trust including leading an expedition to the Himalayas.

His son Ashraf, 18, said: “Most of my dad’s time was dedicated towards his family, and the rest of the time was dedicated towards his profession. He taught me the significan­ce of respect and equality. I am incredibly proud to say that for 18 years of my life Amged El-Hawrani was my father.”

Professor Stephen Powis, NHS national medical director, said: “Amged’s death is not just an individual human tragedy but a stark reminder to the whole country that we all must take this crisis seriously. The advice issued by the Government and the health service can be the difference between life and death.”
