BLACKBURN’S TITLE-WINNING SIDE: WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
MANAGER: KENNY DALGLISH
Became director of football after title win, leaving in 1996. Had spells at Newcastle and Celtic before he returned to Liverpool as manager in 2011, only to be sacked the next year. Became a non-executive director at Anfield in 2013, had a stand named after him in 2017 and was knighted in 2018.
RIGHT-BACK: HENNING BERG
Went on to win the Treble with Manchester United before returning to Ewood Park in 2000. He came back for a third time in 2012 when he lasted 57 days as manager. Has managed in Norway, Poland and Hungary and is currently boss of AC Omonia in Cyprus.
CENTRE-HALF: IAN PEARCE
Replaced Tony Gale, who had made 15 starts in the first part of the season. Went on to play for West Ham and Fulham. He was Chris Sutton’s No2 at Lincoln and scouted for Brighton and Fulham. Has been West Brom’s head of recruitment since 2018.
RIGHT WING: STUART RIPLEY
He was Alan Shearer’s main supply line and joined Southampton in 1998. He set up a physiotherapy and sports injury clinic when he retired. Graduated from the University of Central Lancashire with a first-class degree in French and Law and is now a qualified solicitor.
CENTRAL MIDFIELD: TIM SHERWOOD
Blackburn’s captain went on to play for Tottenham, Portsmouth and Coventry. Managed Tottenham and Aston Villa, where he popularised the gilet. His last footballing postion was as Swindon’s director of football and he is now a media pundit.
STRIKER: CHRIS SUTTON
Signed for £5.5m in 1994, he proved to be the final piece in Blackburn’s title-winning jigsaw, scoring 15 league goals that season. Had an unhappy time with Chelsea after a £10m move in 1999 before tasting success with Celtic. Managed Lincoln from 2009-10 and is now a media pundit.
OWNER: JACK WALKER
Made his fortune in the steel business and bought control of his hometown club in January 1991, hiring Dalglish that October. Spent £25m on their title-winning side and another £20m rebuilding Ewood Park. Died aged 71 of cancer in August 2000 at his home in Jersey.
GOALKEEPER: TIM FLOWERS
Cost a British record £2.3m for a keeper in November 1993. Later played for Leicester, Manchester City and Coventry. Was assistant manager at Coventry and QPR and managed Stafford Rangers, Northampton and, most recently, non-League Solihull Moors, who he took to FA Cup second round last season.
CENTRE-HALF: COLIN HENDRY
Made more than 330 league appearances in his two spells at Blackburn. Left for second time to join Rangers in Scotland, where he won domestic treble in 1999. Managed Blackpool and Clyde and returned to Blackburn to work as Under-21 assistant coach until 2014.
LEFT-BACK: GRAEME LE SAUX
Returned to Chelsea in 1997 and then moved to Southampton before retiring in 2005. Has done media work since and is part of the FA’s Inclusion Advisory Board. Sits on the board of Spanish side RCD Mallorca as a non-executive sporting advisor.
CENTRAL MIDFIELD: MARK ATKINS
The team’s unsung hero who deputised for the injured David Batty in virtually the whole campaign. Went on to play for Wolves, Doncaster and Shrewsbury before managing Stalybridge Celtic and Matlock Town. Is still seen at Ewood Park doing media work for BBC Lancashire.
LEFT WING: JASON WILCOX
Came through Blackburn’s youth ranks and was the longest-serving first-team player in their title-winning side. Went on to join Leeds, Leicester and Blackpool before doing some media work when he retired. He is now Manchester City’s academy director.
STRIKER: ALAN SHEARER
Scored Premier League record 34 goals in 42 games that season. Joined Newcastle for world record £15m in 1996 and became the club’s and the Premier League’s record goalscorer. Briefly managed Newcastle when they were relegated in 2009 and is now one of the BBC’s leading pundits.
