Bread winner... bacon tops sarnie poll

- By Astrid Hall

THE bacon butty was named Britain’s best-loved sandwich yesterday – as tastes change during lockdown.

Results of a poll of 2,000 adults saw a big shift in favourite fillings from two years ago, when a plain cheese sarnie topped the chart.

A spokesman for Warburtons, which commissioned the 2018 and 2020 studies, said: “It’s interesting to see bacon top the list as we’re all craving comforting, simple and hearty meals as social distancing continues.”

Egg mayonnaise was runnerup in the survey, followed by sausage, cheese and pickle, and tuna with mayonnaise.

Ham and cheese – which was second favourite in 2018 – fell to sixth. Along with finishing touches such as mayonnaise, ketchup and pickle, more people are spicing up their sarnies.

Six per cent say they add a splash of Thai chilli sauce sriracha to their fillings.

It also emerged almost half of those polled are eating more bread since lockdown, while a third are enjoying more toast. We average four sandwiches and two toasties a week.

It means that the average family is now getting through two loaves every week – with a fifth of people polled chomping on a sarnie every day.

The Warburton’s spokesman added: “It’s great to see Brits get more creative in the kitchen with jam and cheese, and even peanut butter and marmalade being used in sandwiches.

“The combinations are endless so it comes as no surprise that bread is still one of the nation’s favourite go-tos.”
