YOU NEED THE RIGHT GENES TO GET BACK INTO YOUR JEANS

- MARK WAGHORN

WEIGH TO GO: Like Kate Moss, Courteney Cox and Liz Hurley, our Virginia has discovered the secret of keeping trim ‘The larger me always wanted to know how slender women stay slim, but they never let on’

SCIENTISTS have discovered a mutated gene that keeps people slim even when they gorge on junk food.

A clinical trial is already being planned in which the normal version of the gene will be shut down to see if individuals given a fatty and sugary diet still fail to gain weight.

The variant is carried by about one in every hundred individuals. It offers hope of developing a drug that mimics its effects. Geneticists confirmed the

becomes much simpler as the chances of me having, say, a sirloin steak, are zero. I don’t have pudding, I have cheese. And if you have one blow out once a week and then go back to business as usual, the extra pound or two disappears fast. I weigh myself every day and if the scales show something alarming, no treats.

At the moment my weekly treat is an upmarket Japanese takeaway. It involves dumplings and Japanese pancakes, both of which include wheat, but if you only do it once a week it won’t hurt.

My great weakness is butter: I don’t usually keep it at home, but when I’m confronted with it in a restaurant, it’s not pretty. I pile it on a slice of bread with all the shivering anticipation of a junkie approaching his fix. But I never have more than one slice. I think what I have done is something approaching the keto finding by deleting the normal version, known as ALK, in flies and mice.

They became thinner even though they are eating foods that should have made them fat.

The protein has been of interest for years – and there are already medications that target it.

Senior author of the study Professor Josef Penninger, of the University of British Columbia, Canada, wants to use it to combat obesity. He

diet: very low carb but fat is allowed. Portion sizes are small. When I travel I am always rather taken aback at the amounts other people have on their plates.

Some of it is sheer gluttony, especially with buffets, and it is difficult to respect people who stuff their faces like that.

I like what I eat so I anticipate every meal with pleasure. (Tonight is tuna with vegetable stir-fry.) Also, while on holiday, you can splurge a bit if you stick to the basic principles: I love cheese and onion omelettes and often have them if the hotel can oblige.

A few hints: use small dishes to eat from as you will fool yourself into thinking you’re eating more than you are. And plan your eating at least a week in advance so that said: “We all know these people –it is around one per cent of the population.

“They can eat whatever they want and be metabolically healthy. They eat a lot, they don’t do squats all the time, but they just don’t gain weight.

“Everybody studies obesity and the genetics of obesity. We thought, ‘Let’s just turn it around and start a new research field.’ Let’s study thinness.” you can incorporate your treats. It doesn’t work if you decide that every day is a treat day but since I know that on Saturday I will order in some Japanese and on Monday I’ll have a piece of chocolate, this gives me something to look forward to.And I like being slim.

Elizabeth Hurley said that the secret to being svelte is quite simple: you have to want to be slim more than you want to eat a chocolate biscuit and that is right.

COURTENEY Cox was once asked if being so slender sent the wrong message to her fans. She replied that she liked being able to wear anything she liked. So do I.

Just exercise a little self-control, something a great many of us seem unable to do anymore. So there you have it: very low carbs, small portions, no snacks and no junk food, keep it simple and keep it healthy. But you can have cheese, you can have wine and coffee and, as regular readers might know, I am extremely partial to pink champagne. That’s allowed in my diet plan too. What’s not to like?
