MUSIC MY SIX BEST ALBUMS

- ROGER O’DONNELL GARRY BUSHELL

ROGER, 64, is the keyboardist with The Cure, and he also played with

The Psychedelic Furs and Thompson Twins. His 2 Ravens solo album (Caroline International) is out now.

FRANK ZAPPA & THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION: One Size Fits All (DiscReet)

It was hard to choose between this and Hot Rats, but this is an epic album of orchestral rock’n’roll. I loved his guitar playing and George Duke on keyboards was a huge influence on me.

THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE:

Electric Ladyland (Reprise)

My older brother Pete loved this and hated me listening to it. It’s epic and of course the cover held a lot of interest for a teenager. It was also my introduction to how music can produce an atmosphere.

HERBIE HANCOCK:

Head Hunters (Columbia)

Zappa took me towards jazz and I discovered Herbie when I heard Chameleon – funk with a classic bassline played on synth. If it wasn’t for Herbie Hancock I wouldn’t be playing music.

THE SEX PISTOLS: Never Mind The B ******* (Virgin)

For all musicians this was like an earthquake.

It pulled the rug from under prog rock and pub rock. It didn’t just move the goalposts, it changed them. If it hadn’t been for punk,The Cure wouldn’t have formed.

BJORK:

Medulla (One Little Indian)

I just love it.The album is constructed almost entirely from vocals with Bjork singing one note at a time. Listen to Where Is The Line, so bold, so unique.

STEVIE WONDER:

Talking Book (Tamla)

My brother had the vinyl and I decided then that if I ever made an album I wanted it to sound like this. The audio quality, his voice, the songs so great, the music so loose... the feel is perfect.
