UK to oppose ‘aggressive’ Russia from rejoining G7

-

DONALD Trump has been warned that the UK will oppose any plans to readmit Russia to the G7 after he floated the idea of inviting Vladimir Putin to the next summit.

The US president said the make-up of the group was “very outdated” as he set out plans to expand attendance to discuss the future of China.

A Downing Street spokesman said it was a matter for Mr Trump, as this year’s host, if he wants to invite the Russian president as a guest.

Destabilising

But he stressed Russia was removed from the then G8 in 2014 because of its annexation of Crimea “and we’re yet to see evidence of changed behaviour that would justify readmittance”.

He added: “Russia should not be readmitted to the G7 unless it ceases the aggressive and destabilising activity that threatens the safety of UK citizens and our allies.”

Mr Trump said he also wanted to invite South Korea, India and Australia to the summit, which has been delayed until the autumn due to the coronavirus crisis.

Boris Johnson’s official spokesman said No10 remained “in close contact” with the US about his attendance, which he favours happening in person.
