WE’RE moving into the most critical phase of this pandemic. Yesterday we took some big steps – it was the right thing to do.

Hiding in lockdown for ever is simply not an option, so we must get moving.

It may seem an impossible juggling act to reopen our economy and society while keeping new infections on a downward trend, but it can be done. The success so far across Europe has surprised even the most optimistic scientists.

For months families and friends have been kept apart. It has been the hardest thing about this lockdown. But now the restrictions have been eased, as the fantastic Professor Jonathan Van-Tam puts it, “Don’t tear the pants out of it.”

We’re all being treated like children. I understand it’s frustrating. But if most of us are sensible then we can keep moving out of lockdown safely.

The key ingredients are personal responsibility and common sense. There are 66 million people living in the UK, and the Government can’t possibly police

Keep your distance with friends at barbeques every single one of us. Nobody knows your family’s situation better than you. We should all do what we think is right for our loved ones.

If that means you want to continue shielding, that’s fine. If you want to have five friends round for a barbecue this weekend, enjoy it but keep your distance!

Now that those shielding have been given the green light to spend more time outside, it’s never been more important to respect others.

The person you are brushing past on the pavement could be undergoing chemotherapy and be terrified to be leaving the house.

I always thought it was excellent advice to assume you have the virus and are desperate not to pass it on. The same logic applies today!
