Hello sunshine! 84F is on the way

- By Elly Blake

BRITAIN is set to sizzle on the hottest day of the year so far.

The mercury is forecast to hit 84F (29C) in the South-east today, overtaking the current record of 83F set at Santon Downham, Suffolk, on May 20.

This May was also the driest on record, the Met Office said.

An average of 0.4in (9.7mm) of rain fell, with some areas not seeing a single drop.

The driest county in England was Northamptonshire with 1.5mm of rain. The UK has seen its sunniest spring since records began in 1929 – with 626 hours of bright sunshine beating 1948’s record of 555 hours.

Spring 2020 was also sunnier than every summer except those of 1976, 1989 and 1995, the Met Office said.

Meanwhile, families have been lapping up the weather and enjoying relaxed lockdown rules.

Jean Russell, 88, enjoyed a chat two metres from daughter Jennie Dack in her garden.

Jennie, 60, made the trip from Brighton for the first time since lockdown began in March.

Jennie’s husband Simon captured the moment at Jean’s home in Littlehampton, Sussex. He said: “It was an emotional moment. She was delighted.”
