IS MONTY PYTHON THE BEST COMEDY SHOW OF ALL TIME?

- Steve Whalley, York

Yes

WHILE the four surviving Pythons are all “of an age” it breaks my heart to think I’ll never see them working together again (“Cleese: Pythons will never perform again”, June 1).

I watched Life Of Brian for the first time in years last summer. I was a bit nervous beforehand, in case the groundbreaking comedy had dated.

I needn’t have worried. 40 years after its release it was still as funny and as topical as the first time I saw it as a teenager. Monty Python set the standard for others to follow.

No

WE all loved The Holy Grail, Life Of Brian, and to a lesser extent The Meaning Of Life, but comedy has moved on.What was funny in the 1970s has a terrible knack of looking dated now.

I think John Cleese is right, it’s time to move on.Aged 80, it might be pushing it to ask him to reprise his Ministry Of Silly Walks sketch. It wouldn’t be as funny if he was leaning on a zimmer frame.

Personally, I think Blackadder, The Young Ones, Phoenix Nights and The Inbetweeners were funnier.
