Kate’s son builds fort for coma dad
KATE Garraway’s 10-year-old son Billy has built a fort by his dad’s empty bedside and sleeps there every night while he fights for his life in intensive care.
The Good Morning Britain presenter’s husband Derek Draper, 52, remains in a comatose state after Covid-19 damaged his major organs.
Speaking about her family’s heartbreaking ordeal, Kate, 53, said Billy misses his dad so much he created a play den near his bed
She said: “One of the things that makes it so sad is that I know he would have loved this, our time together in lockdown. He was never happier than being in this house, just the four of us.
“He is such a homebody. He would say, ‘It’s just you, me and the kids’ and he’d be so happy just pottering about, being here and doing a bit of work on his computer.
Kate told how Billy and Derek had been building Lego from Star Wars together before he was admitted to hospital 10 weeks ago. Billy left it unfinished so they could carry on when his dad is out of hospital.
The presenter, who has put on a strong front for Billy and daughter Darcey, 14, admitted it was hard seeing things of Derek around the house.
She said: “It’s full of things he’s chosen.
“He’s trapped at the moment, in a line between living and the uncertainty of recovery, and we’re trapped with that uncertainty as well.”
