Pitching in for a staycation

-

TENT sales have almost doubled since lockdown as holidaymakers forget foreign trips and get ready to go camping instead.

Summer will be the year of the staycation, as millions go back to basics in tents and caravans.

Campsites could open from July 9 as part of the easing of restrictions.

Sales of camping equipment are up 77 per cent and tents have seen an 87 per cent increase during May, according to Pricespy while online searches for staycation locations are soaring. A survey by Auto Trader found 33 per cent of those planning a staycation would consider a caravan. Rebecca Dearden, of Campfire Magazine, says readership has doubled since last year.

And Rachel McConachie, of Scottish Caravans and Motorhomes magazine, said:“Holidaymakers will be looking for safe ways to take a break this year. Caravans provide a ready-made socially-distanced holiday with their own washroom and cooking facilities.”

She predicts some may be put off foreign holidays for years.
